What's so special about our vegetables and flowers?

  • Great for Nature

Our farm is Soil Association certified organic and we don't use any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers making our produce great for wildlife.

We grow according to the 'no-dig' method which enhances soil biodiversity, fertility and structure, and contributes to the health of our soils and the wider ecosystem.

  • Better for the climate

All our produce is seasonal - we only grow varieties appropriate for the time of year in our climate. This means we can grow everything outside or in unheated polytunnels so we don't use energy to grow our produce.

Our farm is in the London Borough of Greenwich so our veg bags and bouquets don't travel long distances to get to you, reducing the environmental footprint of your produce even more.

  • Amazing freshness and flavour

The most delicious and flavourful food and vibrant flowers come from healthy soil that is teeming with life.

We farm organically in ways that enhance soil biodiversity, fertility and nutrition and that translates directly into our produce. You won't find a tastier strawberry or kale leaf or more beautiful, naturally scented flower bouquet in the whole of South East London.

FAQs

What's in your veg bags?

Our bags reflect what's in season and tastiest at the farm each week. It is 100% certified organic.

Small bags contain 4-6 items including either potatoes or onions every week. (unless you opt out of these).

Large bags contain 6-8 items including either potatoes or onions every week. (unless you opt out of these).

We always ensure that you receive a variety of produce throughout the seasons and it's a great way to discover new and exciting seasonal produce.

In the summer months, our bags contain mostly our own produce. For field crops like potatoes and onions, and particularly during the colder months, we supplement the bags with certified organic produce from a range of wonderful larger farms through the Better Food Shed. We buy as locally as possible, according to Growing Communities' Food Zones principles.

What's in your flower bouquets?

A gorgeous bouquet of around 20 stems, grown and arranged by us. The flower varieties will vary depending on what's in season and looking dreamy.

All our flowers are grown on Sitopia Farm in Greenwich using organic, no-dig and regenerative principles, so by choosing us you're doing the best for our soils, our wildlife, our climate and our health. All stems are harvested the day before delivery, that's freshness and sustainability that's hard to beat! As these are seasonal flowers, grown in healthy living soil, without artificial heat or chemicals nor flown in from hotter countries, our flowers are largely only available through Spring-Autumn.

We aim to extend the seasons and continue to share flowers with you wherever possible during the winter through using dried flowers, and what fresh flowers and beautiful herbs we have available, but this does mean availability is limited during November-February and your subscriptions will be largely paused during the winter months.

*Please note the vast majority of our flowers are certified organic, a few perennials are in-conversion to organic.

What are 'add-ons'?

As the season progresses, we will be listing ‘add-on products’ on the website, which you will be able to add on to your regular veg bag or flower subscription orders. We hope to have things like mixed salad, leafy greens, tomatoes, strawberries, beans, bunches of sweet peas or other flowers available during peak season, so make sure to check the website each week for what’s available. We will also send you out reminder emails when we’ve added exciting extras to the shop. All you need to do is add them to your shopping basket before the weekly order cut off deadline and they will be in your bag ready for home delivery or at your pick up location.

What packaging do you use?

We hate wasteful packaging here at Sitopia Farm. Wherever possible we will avoid packaging, but some is necessary to keep your produce as fresh and tasty as possible.

We pack our vegetables into brown paper bags. You can send your bags back to us each week if they're fit to reuse. Please put them out on a Friday morning so our delivery driver can pick up, or if you pick up your bags in person please return them to the pick-up point. If they're not fit to be returned, you can recycle these at home or add to a compost heap.

We put our salad and leafy greens in plastic bags to keep them fresh. After much research we have concluded this to be the lesser of evils. In the past we used 'compostable bags', however at present compostable packaging isn't the solution it might seem to be and plastic still does the best job at keeping produce fresh and reducing food waste. We never seal our plastic bags of salad so that you can easily reuse the bags. These bags can also be recycled at some supermarkets.

How sustainable is your produce?

Sitopia Farm exists because of our passionate commitment to transforming the food system. Industrial agro-chemical food production (which supplies the vast majority of food in supermarkets and convenience stores in the UK) is responsible for about 30% of greenhouse gas emissions globally and massive biodiversity loss amongst other environmental damage. At the same time millions of people in the UK -and many more globally- suffer from diet-related diseases and food poverty is growing.

Everything we do is about seeking to change this. From our certified organic, no-till, regenerative farming practices, to our engagement with our local community, our commitment to delivering within a few miles’ radius of the farm, our eco-friendly packaging and our discounts for those on low incomes, advancing our environmental, health and social objectives is at the heart of what we do. Through buying from us you are playing a critical role in supporting us, the birds, bees and butterflies on our farm, and engendering the urgent food system transformation we all need to see.

How should I look after my flowers?

All our flowers are freshly harvested and conditioned in water before delivery to preserve vase life. We do not use plastic or cellophane flower wrapping or florists’ foam. Instead we use brown paper packaging that can be recycled as part of your council paper recycling or composted at home. To keep them in excellent condition we ask that you put the flowers in water as soon as possible after you receive them and leave some water out on your doorstep (in a jug or vase) if you're not going to be in during your delivery slot.

Flowers from Sitopia Farm have not been treated with any flower preserving chemicals and we do not use flower food. Fresh flowers and clean water is all you need! Giving flowers fresh water every day and snipping the stems off by a few centimetres after a few days will keep your bouquet in top condition for up to a week. If you find that a few flowers do go over during that time then pinch them out of the bouquet and leave the others to continue growing.

Do you offer any discounts?

We offer a 20% discount for those on low incomes (e.g. on Universal Credit). Please get in touch at shop@sitopiafarm.com if you’d like to explore this option.
